Students should submit a graduation application by the semester before their anticipated graduation date. Applications can be submitted through Degree Progress.
Applications should be submitted based on the following timeline, however late applicants may be able to graduate.
- October 1st for spring graduation
- February 1st for summer graduation
- April 1st for fall graduation
*Note to Graduate Degree Applicants:
At the time of filing the graduation application, it is the responsibility of the student to determine whether their advisor will be available to approve the thesis or any other papers necessary for graduation. For deadline information, contact the College of Graduate Studies.
Applications are processed in the order they are received. The application generates a degree audit that is emailed to the student and will detail outstanding graduation requirements. Review your audit carefully to ensure you meet all the requirements.
You should contact your academic advisor as you approach graduation, and review your Degree Progress and the CMU Bulletin for degree requirements. Awarding of degrees is dependent on the successful completion of all requirements.
There are two commencement ceremonies held each year: May and December.
Spring graduates can participate in the May commencement, and summer and fall graduates can participate in the December commencement.
Graduating students will be emailed in advance of their commencement ceremony about tickets, cap and gown, announcements and commencement day procedures.
Eligible students will receive an email a few weeks prior to commencement with options to pick up their cord or medallion. Cords and medallions can also be picked up at the registration table on the day of commencement.
Honors cords and medallions are for undergraduate students earning a bachelor's degree only. An undergraduate student graduating with honors will receive, at no cost, honors medallions or cords to wear at the commencement ceremony.
Summa Cum Laude and Magna Cum Laude graduates receive medallions.
Cum Laude graduates receive cords.
Diplomas are mailed to the graduate's permanent address approximately 4-6 weeks following the commencement ceremony.
